PTCB Certification: Everything Pharmacy Technicians Need to Know
Article Overview
The PTCB CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) credential is the gold standard for pharmacy technician certification in the United States. Recognized in all 50 states, it demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills to work safely and effectively in any pharmacy setting. This article explains what PTCB certification is, how to earn it, and why it matters for your career.
Key Details
PTCB certification is a national credential issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. It is recognized by employers across all pharmacy settings: retail, hospital, specialty, mail-order, and long-term care. Most states either require or strongly prefer PTCB-certified technicians.
The PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) covers four main knowledge domains: Medications (40%), Federal Requirements (12.5%), Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (26.25%), and Order Entry and Processing (21.25%). The exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions with a 2-hour time limit.
Allied Health Academy's curriculum is aligned directly with PTCB exam domains. Our 189-hour program covers every topic area tested on the PTCE, with practice exams and test-taking strategies built into the final module. We also include a PTCB exam voucher ($129 value) with your enrollment.
Why does certification matter beyond meeting state requirements? Certified pharmacy technicians consistently earn $2 to $4 more per hour than non-certified peers. Hospital positions, specialty pharmacy roles, and management opportunities almost universally require PTCB certification. It is not just a credential; it is a career accelerator.
To maintain your CPhT certification, you must complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years, including at least one hour in pharmacy law. PTCB also offers advanced certifications like CSPT (sterile compounding) and CPhT-Adv that can further increase your earning potential.
